How to apply for H-GAC Elder Justice Program — Free Civil Legal Help for Crime Victims (Montgomery County)
Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) Area Agency on Aging. H-GAC launched the Elder Justice Program in 2018; its staff lawyers serve nine counties — Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Waller and Wharton.
Who it's for
Free legal help for older adults who have been the victim of a crime. H-GAC's team of lawyers works at no charge to stop abuse, limit the harm, recover lost money or property, and pursue justice. Covered crimes include consumer fraud, contractor scams, family violence, financial exploitation, identity theft, internet scams, neglect or physical abuse, sexual assault, stalking or harassment, and "sweetheart" scams. The crime does not have to have been reported to law enforcement, and no referral is needed. Services include legal representation in civil matters tied to the crime, legal advocacy with law enforcement and prosecutors, help navigating the criminal justice system and Adult Protective Services, and referrals to community services. You must have been the victim of a crime — the lawyers take civil matters directly related to that crime. Age 65+ or a disability at any age qualifies you to be seen. The program works by appointment only and does not accept walk-ins. Call or email from a safe phone or account.
