How to apply for SenioRx — free or low-cost prescription drugs in Alabama

Alabama Department of Senior Services (through the Area Agencies on Aging)

Who it's for

SenioRx helps Alabamians get free or low-cost prescription medicines from drug companies' patient assistance programs. Eligible people may get a three-month supply at a time, with refills while they stay eligible. You can qualify if you are 55 or older, have a chronic medical condition, have no or limited prescription drug insurance, and meet income limits. People of any age with a disability can also qualify, including people who have applied for Social Security disability and are waiting for a decision or are in the 24-month Medicare waiting period. Call your local Area Agency on Aging at 1-800-AGE-LINE (1-800-243-5463).

The page does not print the income limits; the local Area Agency on Aging checks income and insurance. Medicines come from drug company assistance programs, and not every drug is available.

What to say when you call

"Hello, I'm calling to ask about SenioRx — free or low-cost prescription drugs. I'd like to know whether I may qualify, what documents I need, and whether I can apply online, by mail, by phone, or in person. What is the best next step?"

Tip: have a pen ready, ask for the person's name, and write down any case or reference number they give you.

Step by step

  1. Review the program rules to see if you may qualify. SenioRx is for people age 55 or older with a chronic medical condition, no or limited prescription drug insurance, and income within the program limits. People of any age with a disability may also qualify.
  2. Contact your local Area Agency on Aging to apply. Apply online or call 1-800-243-5463 for help with the application.
  3. Answer questions about your income and prescription drug insurance. The local Area Agency on Aging checks these rules because the page does not list the income limits.
  4. Share the name of the medicine you need and complete any program forms. SenioRx works through drug company patient assistance programs, so not every drug is available.
  5. Follow any instructions from the Area Agency on Aging after you apply. Ask what to do next and whether any other information is needed.

What to expect: After you apply, the Area Agency on Aging reviews your information and checks whether your medicine is offered through a drug company assistance program. Processing times vary, so ask the agency for an estimate. If approved, you may get up to a three-month supply at a time. You can keep getting refills every three months as long as you remain eligible.
