How to apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Social Security Administration

Who it's for

SSI is a federal monthly cash benefit for people 65 and older (or blind / disabled at any age) with very limited income and resources. It's a separate program from Social Security retirement — you can qualify for SSI even if you never worked enough to get Social Security, and many people qualify for both. Some states add a State Supplementary Payment (SSP) on top of the federal benefit — in California that adds several thousand dollars a year. SSI is also a gateway: it can automatically open the door to Medicaid, SNAP, and Extra Help.

People who qualify for one senior program often qualify for others. See everything you may qualify for — free, no SSN, about five minutes.

What to say when you call

"Hello, I'm calling to ask about Supplemental Security Income (SSI). I'd like to know whether I may qualify, what documents I need, and whether I can apply online, by mail, by phone, or in person. I understand I may need social Security card, birth certificate or proof of age, proof of U.S. residency — is anything else required? What is the best next step?"

Tip: have a pen ready, ask for the person's name, and write down any case or reference number they give you.

Step by step

  1. Gather your documents before you start: your Social Security card, birth certificate or other proof of age, proof of U.S. residency, bank statements from the last 3 months, proof of all income (such as Social Security, pensions, or wages), and information about any property you own.
  2. Choose how you want to apply: online through the Social Security Administration's website, or by phone at 1-800-772-1213.
  3. Complete the SSI application by answering questions about your age, income, resources, and living situation. Have your documents nearby so you can refer to them.
  4. Submit your application and keep a record of your confirmation number or the date you called, in case you need to follow up.
  5. Respond promptly if SSA contacts you for additional information or a follow-up interview, as this helps avoid delays in processing your claim.

What to expect: After submitting, SSA will review your application and may contact you to verify information or schedule an interview. Processing times vary, so ask SSA for an estimate when you apply. If approved, California residents will receive both the federal SSI payment and the State Supplementary Payment (SSP) added on top. Approval may also automatically qualify you for Medi-Cal, CalFresh, and Extra Help with Medicare costs. SSI requires an annual review to confirm you still meet eligibility requirements, and SSA may also re-evaluate your case after major life changes such as a move, change in income, or change in household size — so notify SSA promptly whenever your situation changes.
