How to apply for Monterey-Salinas Transit Senior Discount Fare

Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST)

Who it's for

Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) provides the public bus system across the Monterey Peninsula, Salinas, and the Salinas Valley. Riders 65 and older qualify for the Senior Discount fare. MST does NOT use the Clipper card — it pioneered open-payment senior discounts: register your contactless Visa or Mastercard at benefits.calitp.org with a state-issued ID from any U.S. state, and the discount applies automatically when you tap that card or mobile wallet on an MST contactless payment reader. The Senior Discount fare is $1 for up to 2 hours of systemwide rides, and fare capping guarantees that registered seniors will never be charged more than $3 per day. MST also accepts cash and the MST GoCard for those without contactless cards. For questions, call MST Customer Service at 1-888-678-2871.

What you'll need

  • Proof of age 65+ (any U.S. state-issued ID card, driver's license, Medicare card, or passport)
  • Contactless-enabled Visa or Mastercard, or willingness to use the MST GoCard / cash fare option
