How to apply for Louisiana Medicaid for people 65+, blind, or disabled (SSI and Provisional Medicaid)
Louisiana Department of Health (Louisiana Medicaid)
Who it's for
Louisiana Medicaid gives full health coverage to people who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled and have low income. People who get SSI from Social Security qualify for Medicaid. People who do not get SSI can apply for Provisional Medicaid, which gives the same full coverage. For 2026, countable income must be no more than $994 a month for one person or $1,491 for a couple. Resources must be $2,000 or less for one person or $3,000 for a couple. Resources include things like bank accounts and stocks. Louisiana Medicaid can decide a disability itself, without waiting for Social Security. Apply online, in person, by mail, or by phone at 1-888-342-6207.
Limits shown are the 2026 Provisional Medicaid limits. They apply to countable income, after a $20 disregard and some work-income deductions, so gross income can be a little higher. Help with rent or food from someone else can count as income. People with higher income may still qualify through Medically Needy spend-down, the Medicare Savings Programs, or the long-term care path ($2,982 a month). Louisiana Medicaid makes the final decision.
