How to apply for Homestead Property Tax Credit — Maryland
Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT)
Who it's for
Maryland's Homestead Property Tax Credit limits how fast the taxable value of your main home can go up. Each year, the taxable assessment can rise no more than 10% for state tax, and many counties and towns set an even lower cap. You pay no property tax on any increase above the cap. There is no age or income limit, but the home must be your principal residence. You only need to apply once. Check SDAT's Real Property search to see if you already have the credit on file, and apply online if you do not.
The credit only shows on your bill in years when your assessment rises faster than the cap, so some years it may be $0. The home must be your one principal residence, not a rental or vacation home. SDAT decides eligibility.
