How to apply for Mississippi Elderly and Disabled Waiver (Medicaid home and community-based services)
Mississippi Division of Medicaid (DOM), Office of Long Term Care; case management by the Planning and Development Districts
Who it's for
The Elderly and Disabled Waiver is a statewide Medicaid program that helps people stay at home instead of moving to a nursing home. It is for people age 21 or older who would need nursing home care without these services. A case management team of a registered nurse and a licensed social worker from the local Planning and Development District assesses your needs and makes a plan. Services can include personal care, adult day services, home-delivered meals, in-home and institutional respite, extended home health visits, medication management, environmental safety services, and help moving out of a nursing home. You must qualify for Medicaid through SSI or with monthly income up to 300 percent of the SSI rate ($2,982 in 2026). If your income is higher, you can still qualify by paying the amount over the limit to Medicaid each month under an income trust. The resource limit is $4,000 for one person, and a spouse at home can keep more. Call the Division of Medicaid toll-free at 1-800-421-2408.
You must need nursing home level of care, confirmed by a doctor and a long-term care assessment, and recertified at least every 12 months. There is a 5-year look-back on giving away assets. Special rules let a husband or wife at home keep more income and savings. The Division of Medicaid makes the final decision.
