How to apply for Renters' Tax Credit (60+) — Maryland
Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT)
Who it's for
Maryland's Renters' Tax Credit pays up to $1,000 a year to renters — the renter's counterpart of the homeowners' credit, on the idea that rent indirectly pays property tax. Renters age 60 or older (or 100% disabled, or surviving spouses 50+) qualify based on an income chart; younger renters with children may also qualify. Apply to SDAT by October 1.
Eligibility follows an income-vs-rent chart on the SDAT page rather than one income cap; SDAT computes the credit.

Step by step
- Gather your documents before you start: your completed SDAT Renters' Tax Credit application, your lease and proof of rent paid, and your income documentation.

- Submit your application by October 1. Applications received after that date will not be considered for that year's credit.
- Keep copies of everything you submit in case SDAT needs follow-up information.
What to expect: After you submit, SDAT reviews your application and uses the income-vs-rent chart to calculate your credit amount, up to $1,000 per year. Processing times vary, so contact SDAT directly if you need an estimate of when to expect a decision. Because this credit is annual, you will need to reapply each year by the October 1 deadline to continue receiving the benefit.
