How to apply for Senior Income Tax Credit (65+) — Maryland
Comptroller of Maryland
Who it's for
Maryland gives residents 65 and older a nonrefundable state income-tax credit: $1,000 for single filers with federal adjusted gross income up to $100,000, and $1,750 for joint filers (both 65+) up to $150,000. Claim it on the Maryland income tax return — no separate application. Maryland also does not tax Social Security benefits.
The credit is nonrefundable (it offsets tax owed); the Comptroller applies the AGI limits from the return.
People who qualify for one senior program often qualify for others. See everything you may qualify for — free, no SSN, about five minutes.

What to say when you call
"Hello, I'm calling to ask about Senior Income Tax Credit (65+) — Maryland. I'd like to know whether I may qualify, what documents I need, and whether I can apply online, by mail, by phone, or in person. I understand I may need maryland income tax return (credit claimed on it) — is anything else required? What is the best next step?"
Tip: have a pen ready, ask for the person's name, and write down any case or reference number they give you.
Step by step
- Confirm you are a Maryland resident age 65 or older and that your federal adjusted gross income (AGI) falls within the program limits — up to $100,000 for single filers or up to $150,000 for joint filers (both spouses must be 65+).
- Gather the documents and information needed to complete your Maryland income tax return, including your federal AGI and any income statements.
- Claim the Senior Income Tax Credit directly on your Maryland income tax return — no separate application form is required.
- File your Maryland income tax return online or by phone at 1-800-638-2937 for assistance from the Comptroller of Maryland.
- Keep a copy of your filed return for your records.
What to expect: After you file your Maryland income tax return, the Comptroller of Maryland applies the credit based on the AGI reported on your return. Because the credit is nonrefundable, it offsets any Maryland income tax you owe but will not result in a refund on its own. Processing times vary, so contact the Comptroller at 1-800-638-2937 for an estimate. This credit must be claimed each year when you file your annual Maryland income tax return, so be sure to include it every tax season you qualify.
