What to say when you call
"Hello, I'm calling to ask about SLO RTA Senior Discount Fare (65-79 half fare; VIP Gold Pass free at 80+). I'd like to know whether I may qualify, what documents I need, and whether I can apply online, by mail, by phone, or in person. I understand I may need proof of age 65+ (CA driver's license, state ID, or passport showing date of birth) — Medicare card holders qualify for the half fare regardless of age, completed RTA Basic Eligibility Form (two pages) and a photo taken at the RTA office for the Discount Photo ID Card (65-79) or VIP Gold Pass (80+) — is anything else required? What is the best next step?"
Tip: have a pen ready, ask for the person's name, and write down any case or reference number they give you.
Step by step
- Call the RTA office at 805-541-2228 ext. 4833 to confirm hours and let them know you plan to visit.
- Download or request the two-page RTA Basic Eligibility Form ahead of your visit, or pick one up at the RTA office at 253 Elks Lane, San Luis Obispo.
- Gather your proof of age — a California driver's license, state ID, or passport showing your date of birth. If you have a Medicare card, bring that instead to qualify for the half fare regardless of age.
- Complete the two-page Basic Eligibility Form before or during your visit to the RTA office.
- Bring your completed form and proof of eligibility to the RTA office at 253 Elks Lane, San Luis Obispo, where staff will take your photo for the card.
- Receive your RTA Discount Photo ID Card (ages 65–79, half fare) or your VIP Gold Pass (ages 80 and older, free fare on all SLO County fixed routes).
What to expect: After your photo is taken and your form is reviewed at the RTA office, staff will process your Discount Photo ID Card or VIP Gold Pass. Processing times vary, so ask staff for an estimate when you visit. Once you have your card, present it when boarding RTA fixed routes to receive your discounted or free fare. Cards are subject to renewal per RTA policy — ask staff about the renewal schedule when you apply so you know when to return.
