Energy Assistance (LIHEAP) — Sarasota County

County · Florida

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps income-eligible Sarasota County households pay home heating and cooling bills, with crisis help when a shutoff is imminent or service is already off. In Sarasota County it is delivered by a local LIHEAP provider (find via the Florida state LIHEAP locator). Sarasota County Human Services Emergency Assistance

County · Florida

Sarasota County's Health and Human Services Department coordinates the county's safety-net programs for low-income residents in crisis. The Department's Human Services division administers state-mandated indigent care funding (under §409.211 Fla. Stat. and related statutes) and provides intake and referral for residents needing emergency help with rent, mortgage, utilities, or basic needs. The county ran the federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) during the COVID years, but that program has ended and the county no longer lists it. Sarasota County also coordinates with the Office of Housing and Community Development for longer-term housing programs and with the Sarasota Memorial Hospital District for indigent medical care. To start an intake, call Sarasota County at (941) 861-5000 (general number) or 311, or visit the Health and Human Services page at scgov.net for the current intake portal.

Estimated bill savings: $500–$6,000 a year

In this county: Sarasota County's emergency aid changes with federal funding cycles. The COVID-era rental assistance program (ERAP) has ended and is no longer listed by the county. The income figure here is HUD's 80% area median income for Sarasota County, used as a general guide — each program sets its own limit, and federal programs like LIHEAP usually set lower ones. For emergency help, including indigent medical care and state-mandated services, call (941) 861-5000 or 311 and ask for an intake with Health and Human Services. Sarasota residents can also use SMH District Patient Assistance for hospital care, and AAASWFL services for seniors 60+.

Healthcare in Sarasota County

Programs here typically lower an eligible household's bills by $500–$40,000 a year.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital District Patient Assistance

County · Florida

Sarasota Memorial Hospital is run by the Sarasota County Public Hospital District — one of the very few remaining genuinely public hospital districts in Florida (most peer counties privatized theirs decades ago). The District is funded by countywide property tax and governed by a publicly elected hospital board, which makes its charity-care obligation a real public-mission obligation, not just an IRS §501(r) compliance exercise. SMH's Patient Assistance Programs offer three layered options. Traditional Charity Care is granted to patients who meet the strict income criteria set by the State of Florida (typically tied to federal poverty guidelines) — qualifying patients receive a 100 percent discount. Community Support is the District's broader local-mission layer: patients who don't strictly qualify for Traditional Charity Care but show economic hardship may still receive assistance funded by the District's tax base. The Sliding Scale Program offers significantly reduced rates to lower-income uninsured patients. SMH also operates a Community Specialty Clinic that provides FREE specialty care to uninsured and underinsured residents who meet eligibility criteria — a service most peer Florida hospitals don't offer. Applications must include income documentation (typically the last 4 paychecks prior to the date of service) and must be returned within 7-10 business days of the documentation request; contact the team within 180 days of admission. Apply at the Financial Assistance desk during your visit or call (941) 917-8080.

Estimated bill savings: $500–$40,000 a year

In this county: SMH financial assistance is per-encounter — you qualify only when you receive care at a Sarasota Memorial facility. The income threshold modeled above (~300% Federal Poverty Level for a single-person household 2026) is the broad upper bound for sliding-scale assistance; Traditional Charity Care (100% discount) requires stricter income thresholds set by the State of Florida — typically at or below 200% FPL. The District's Community Support layer extends help to patients with economic hardship who don't strictly qualify for charity care, but qualification is at the District's discretion. Applications must be returned within 7-10 days of discharge — don't wait. SMH's Community Specialty Clinic is a distinct program (free specialty care for eligible uninsured/underinsured) — ask the financial counselor about it during intake.

Senior Friendship Centers Meals + AAA Southwest Florida Services (Sarasota)

County · Florida

The Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida (AAASWFL) is the nonprofit designated by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs as the AAA + ADRC for Planning and Service Area 8 — a seven-county region covering Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hendry, Lee, and Sarasota. In Sarasota County, the contracted meals provider is Senior Friendship Centers, Inc. (SFC) — a major regional nonprofit that serves nearly 300,000 meals each year to seniors across Sarasota, DeSoto, Charlotte, and Lee counties. Home-delivered meals come once a week as up to 7 frozen meals at a time; congregate dining is also offered at SFC senior center locations. Eligibility is age 60+ and Sarasota County residency. AAASWFL also coordinates the full PSA 8 senior service portfolio — case management, in-home care, caregiver support, Alzheimer's services, SHINE Medicare counseling, and benefits screening — accessible through the AAASWFL Elder Helpline at 1-866-413-5337. For Sarasota home-delivered meals call SFC at (941) 373-5027; for dining centres and general information call the SFC main office at (941) 955-2122.

Estimated service value: $1,800–$12,000 a year

In this county: Congregate meals require only age 60+ and Sarasota residency — call SFC at (941) 584-0048 to be assigned to a senior center. Home-delivered meals (delivered once weekly as up to 7 frozen meals) additionally require documented homebound status or functional inability to prepare meals — an SFC or AAASWFL case manager makes that determination, and most service categories operate a prioritized client list. There is no income or asset test for OAA services, but participants are offered the option to contribute voluntarily based on means; no one is denied for inability to pay. The AAASWFL Elder Helpline at 1-866-413-5337 is the integrated entry point for the full PSA 8 senior service portfolio.

Breeze Plus Paratransit (Sarasota County)

County · Florida

Breeze Plus is Sarasota County's shared-ride paratransit service, operated by Via with booking by phone or through the Breeze Plus app. It has three eligibility pathways. ADA paratransit serves riders whose disability prevents them from using fixed-route Breeze buses. Transportation Disadvantaged (TD) serves riders who are ADA-qualified, or age 65 and over, or financially burdened with household income under 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Veterans Medical carries veterans to the Bay Pines and Tampa VA hospitals. ADA and TD trips cost $3 each way; Veterans Medical fares run $8 to $13 depending on the pickup point. Call 941-861-1018 about eligibility and applications, then 941-777-6000 to book once approved.

Estimated service value: $1,500–$7,500 a year

In this county: Breeze Plus eligibility is decided by an application review, so this check can only tell you that you appear eligible to apply. ADA approval may be temporary, conditional, or unconditional. You do not need an ADA-qualifying disability to ride: the Transportation Disadvantaged pathway also covers riders age 65 and over and riders with household income under 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Veterans travelling to the Bay Pines or Tampa VA hospitals register separately and pay $8 to $13 depending on the pickup point. Apply at 941-861-1018.
