General Assistance in Marion County

Programs here typically lower an eligible household's bills by $500–$5,000 a year.

Marion County Community Services — Rent + Mortgage + Utility Assistance

County · Florida

Marion County's Community Services Department administers the county's safety-net assistance programs from its Ocala offices at 2710 E. Silver Springs Boulevard. The department provides one-time financial assistance with rent, mortgage, or utility payments — including electric, water, sewer, internet, and cable — paid directly to the landlord or utility provider on behalf of qualifying Marion residents. Payments may cover both arrears (past-due amounts) and future bills depending on funding availability and the applicant's situation. As an entitlement recipient of federal HUD funds, Marion County was awarded $3,217,585 in HOME-ARP funds that may be deployed for tenant-based rental assistance (TBRA). Applications are accepted on a first-qualified, first-served basis as long as funding is available — submitting an application does not guarantee approval. Apply online via marionfl.org or in person at 2710 E. Silver Springs Boulevard. Call (352) 671-8770 (fax 352-671-8769) for application questions and current intake status.

Estimated bill savings: $500–$5,000 a year

In this county: Marion County Community Services assistance is funding-constrained — applications are reviewed on a first-qualified, first-served basis as long as funding is available, and submission does not guarantee approval. The income gate modeled here (80% AMI = $47,050 for 1-person household 2026) is the published 2026 SHIP/HUD 80% limit (Florida Housing Finance Corporation, effective 5/1/2026); specific sub-programs within the department may use stricter income gates. Utility payments are paid directly to the utility provider (not to the household). The HOME-ARP tenant-based rental assistance pathway is COVID-era ARPA funding that may eventually exhaust — check current intake status before applying. Apply online via marionfl.org or in person at 2710 E. Silver Springs Boulevard, Ocala.

Healthcare in Marion County

Programs here typically lower an eligible household's bills by $500–$35,000 a year.

AdventHealth Financial Assistance Policy (Marion — AdventHealth Ocala)

County · Florida

AdventHealth is the dominant private nonprofit hospital system in Marion County, with AdventHealth Ocala (formerly Munroe Regional Medical Center, acquired by AdventHealth in 2019) serving as the primary Marion-county hospital. Marion's other major hospital is HCA Florida Ocala Hospital (private for-profit, HCA Healthcare). AdventHealth's system-wide §501(r) Financial Assistance Policy applies at AdventHealth Ocala under the same terms as at AdventHealth Altamonte Springs, Kissimmee, Celebration, and other Florida AdventHealth hospitals. Under the AdventHealth policy: patients with annual household income at or below 250 percent of the Federal Poverty Guideline receive a 100 percent reduction in financial responsibility for emergent or medically necessary care. Beyond charity care, AdventHealth provides Amounts Generally Billed (AGB) protection for uninsured patients — billing is automatically capped at the average of accounts paid in full over the past 12 months for Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and contracted commercial insurance. Uninsured AdventHealth patients are never billed more than this amount, regardless of charity-care application. Call 800-462-0490 for assistance; mail completed forms to AdventHealth, PO Box 935979, Atlanta, GA 31193-5979.

Estimated bill savings: $500–$35,000 a year

In this county: AdventHealth Financial Assistance is per-encounter and applies to emergent or medically necessary care only. Full 100% charity is available for patients at or below 250% of the Federal Poverty Guideline (the modeled $39,900 figure is 250% FPL for a single-person household 2026; scaled up by household size). Uninsured patients automatically receive Amounts Generally Billed (AGB) protection regardless of income — uninsured bills are capped at insurance-equivalent rates, typically a 60-80% reduction from list charges. AdventHealth Ocala is the primary Marion hospital. If you receive care at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital instead, you'll need to ask about HCA's separate financial assistance policy — HCA's terms are typically less generous than AdventHealth's per-encounter charity.

Nutrition in Marion County

Programs here typically provide services worth $1,800–$10,000 a year to an eligible household.

Marion Senior Services Nutrition Program (Elder Options PSA 3)

County · Florida

Marion Senior Services, Inc. is the nonprofit contracted by Elder Options (the PSA 3 Area Agency on Aging) to deliver senior services across Marion County. The agency operates from 1101 SW 20th Court in Ocala and provides Older Americans Act Title III nutrition through both congregate dining at senior centers and home-delivered Meals on Wheels for homebound residents. The same Marion Senior Services umbrella also operates Marion Transit Services (paratransit + TD) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Distribution program for income-eligible seniors 60+, making the agency a one-stop hub for Marion senior services. Eligibility for congregate meals is age 60+ and Marion residency; home-delivered meals additionally require functional documentation of homebound status or inability to prepare meals. For the Commodity Supplemental Food Distribution, applicants must meet income requirements as well. Apply by calling Marion Senior Services at (352) 620-3501 or the Elder Options Helpline at 1-800-262-2243 for a needs assessment that screens for all PSA 3 services.

Estimated service value: $1,800–$10,000 a year

In this county: Congregate meals require only age 60+ and Marion residency — call Marion Senior Services at (352) 620-3501 to be referred to a senior center. Home-delivered meals additionally require documented homebound status — a case manager makes that determination, and most service categories operate a prioritized client list (waitlist). There is no income or asset test for standard OAA services, but Commodity Supplemental Food Distribution has income requirements (typically 130% FPL). Marion Senior Services is the integrated entry point for the full PSA 3 senior service portfolio in Marion — calling (352) 620-3501 also screens for Marion Transit Services, CCE, HCE, ADI, and other senior programs. The Elder Options Helpline at 1-800-262-2243 is the broader PSA 3 (16-county) entry point.

Transportation in Marion County

Programs here typically provide services worth $75–$6,000 a year to an eligible household.

Marion Transit Services (TD + ADA Paratransit)

County · Florida

Marion Transit is Marion County's door-to-door paratransit service, run by Marion Senior Services, Inc. (d/b/a Marion Transit), which has been the Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged's designated Community Transportation Coordinator (CTC) for Marion County since 1982 (re-designated in June 2020). Service covers all of Marion County (1,663 square miles), and Marion Transit also provides the ADA complementary paratransit for riders who cannot use SunTran's fixed-route buses in Ocala because of a disability. Two pathways share the same intake: Florida Transportation Disadvantaged (TD) eligibility for riders who cannot drive, have no other transportation, and cannot afford a ride, and ADA paratransit eligibility for riders whose disability prevents use of the fixed-route bus. An application form is required for all riders, with a medical affidavit from a medical provider affirming a disability or inability to drive; trips are booked from two weeks to 72 hours in advance, and fare waivers are available to qualified riders. Call 352-620-3071 for eligibility, reservations, and applications, or visit 1101 SW 20th Ct, Ocala, FL 34471.

Estimated service value: $1,200–$6,000 a year

In this county: Marion Transit Services eligibility is decided by application — disability alone (ADA pathway) or low income (TD pathway) does not automatically qualify; the application must be reviewed and approved. This check can tell you that you appear functionally eligible to apply. Two pathways share the same operational umbrella but have different gating criteria: the ADA pathway requires medical documentation of disability functionally preventing fixed-route use; the TD pathway requires demonstration of need plus income eligibility. For Marion's largely rural geography, Marion Transit Services is often the ONLY public transit option for rural residents — SunTran fixed-route serves only the Ocala urban corridor. Apply at Marion Transit, 1101 SW 20th Ct, Ocala, or call (352) 620-3071 (Marion Senior Services main line: (352) 620-3501).
