Senior benefits in Henderson County, North Carolina

The Land of Sky Area Agency on Aging serves older adults age 60 and older and their caregivers in Henderson County. Services include congregate and home-delivered meals, family caregiver support and respite, the Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) for Medicare counseling, options counseling for long-term care, the long-term care ombudsman, and adult protective services coordination. North Carolina's Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) gives a one-time payment toward heating costs, and the Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) helps when a household faces a heating or cooling emergency. Both are run by the Henderson County Department of Social Services. Households with an older adult (60+) or a person with a disability can apply starting December 1; other eligible households apply starting in January, until funds run out. UNC Health Pardee in Hendersonville is a main hospital serving Henderson County (AdventHealth Hendersonville also serves it). Pardee is covered by UNC Health's system-wide Financial Assistance Program, which helps North Carolina residents pay for medically necessary care at household income up to 300% of the federal poverty guideline. Two things are easy to miss. First, since January 2026 you may be assessed WITHOUT APPLYING: UNC Health checks income through a third-party vendor after treatment and tells you before it sends a bill, discounting the balance 100% at or below 200% of poverty, 75% from 201-250%, and 50% from 251-300%. Second, UNC Health is relieving old medical debt — all unpaid hospital debt back to January 2014 for North Carolina residents on Medicaid, with no application at all, and, since October 2025, debt written off as uncollectible for any North Carolina resident at or below 350% of poverty. Home Care Independence lets Henderson County residents age 60 and older hire a family member, friend or other person of their choice as a paid personal assistant. The assistant helps with personal care such as bathing and dressing, and with home tasks such as cooking, cleaning, laundry and shopping. A care advisor helps you plan and direct your own care, and a payroll service pays the assistant. Call Henderson County Department of Social Services at 828-697-5500 to ask about openings.

Housing Assistance Corporation makes minor repairs and safety improvements to the homes of Henderson County residents age 60 and older who have no one able and willing to do the work for them. Depending on what the local provider offers, help can include security improvements, minor home repairs, ramps, grab bars and other accessibility changes, and repair or replacement of basic furnishings and appliances. Apple Country Public Transit runs three bus routes plus door-to-door paratransit in Hendersonville, Fletcher, and Laurel Park. All routes and paratransit trips are free — there is no fare for anyone, and no age or disability requirement to ride. Buses run 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, from the Transfer Station at 4th and Grove Street in downtown Hendersonville. Henderson County contracts with WNCSource (formerly WCCA) to operate the service, and a rider app shows buses in real time.
